On September 19, 1692, Giles Corey was pressed to death (peine forte et dure) during the Salem Witch Trials. The 80-year-old farmer refused to enter a plea when accused of witchcraft, which meant he could not be tried. To force a plea, authorities placed heavy stones on his chest over the course of two days.

According to a letter from Thomas Putnam to Judge Samuel Sewall, Corey’s daughter Ann reported that her father’s apparition appeared to her, claiming he had been murdered by pressing and that “the Devil there appeared unto him,” promising he would not be hanged.

Corey’s death marked one of the most brutal episodes of the Salem Witch Trials, which ultimately claimed 20 lives. The final executions would take place just three days later, on September 22, 1692.

Did you know some of the most important sites conn

Did you know some of the most important sites connected to the Salem Witch Trials are actually in Danvers, just a couple towns over from Salem?

In 1692, Danvers was known as Salem Village—and this is where the accusations that would become the Salem Witch Trials first began.

Today, you can visit the Salem Village Witchcraft Victims’ Memorial, erected in 1992 to mark the 300th anniversary of the trials. Unlike Salem’s memorial honoring the 20 executed, this memorial recognizes all 25 people who died as a result of the witchcraft crisis.

It’s one of several historic sites still standing or marked throughout Danvers that connect us directly to the events of 1692.
