On September 19, 1692, Giles Corey was pressed to On September 19, 1692, Giles Corey was pressed to death (peine forte et dure) during the Salem Witch Trials. The 80-year-old farmer refused to enter a plea when accused of witchcraft, which meant he could not be tried. To force a plea, authorities placed heavy stones on his chest over the course of two days. According to a letter from Thomas Putnam to Judge Samuel Sewall, Corey’s daughter Ann reported that her father’s apparition appeared to her, claiming he had been murdered by pressing and that “the Devil there appeared unto him,” promising he would not be hanged. Corey’s death marked one of the most brutal episodes of the Salem Witch Trials, which ultimately claimed 20 lives. The final executions would take place just three days later, on September 22, 1692.
