Meet Michael. Originally from Decorah, Iowa, and Meet Michael.

Originally from Decorah, Iowa, and now right here in Salem.

If you’ve toured with Michael, you know one of his favorite parts of the job is connecting with people. Whether it’s chatting with guests after the tour, running into them around town, or somehow turning a bored teenager into the most engaged person in the group, he genuinely loves the people side of what he does.

He talked about those early days of guiding — when it was freezing outside, but the people who showed up made it all worth it. Those tours still stick with him.

One thing he loves about guiding is that the stories never seem to get old. Every group brings a different energy, asks different questions, and creates a completely different experience.

When he’s not giving tours, you’ll probably find him enjoying Salem’s live music scene, hanging out at Mercy Tavern, exploring the PEM, or stopping by the Speakeasy Lounge at Deacon Giles.

We’re really proud to have him on our team and wanted to introduce you.

Have you ever toured with Michael?

On this day in history — May 27, 1692 — Sir Willia On this day in history — May 27, 1692 — Sir William Phips appointed nine magistrates to serve on the newly created Court of Oyer and Terminer.

The special court was created specifically to handle the growing number of witchcraft accusations spreading across Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials.

The men appointed were William Stoughton, Jonathan Corwin, Bartholomew Gedney, John Hathorne, John Richards, Samuel Sewall, Nathaniel Saltonstall, Peter Sergeant, and Waitstill Winthrop.

These were some of the most powerful men in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Many were wealthy merchants, militia officers, longtime magistrates, members of the Governor’s Council, and several were connected through family ties. Many had also attended Harvard.

The creation of the Court of Oyer and Terminer marked a major turning point in 1692. What had begun as fear, accusations, and examinations now had a formal court behind it.

And the consequences would soon become deadly. 🕯️
