March 2, 1692 — Salem Village. On the second day March 2, 1692 — Salem Village. On the second day of examination, Tituba’s testimony shifted the course of the accusations. Under questioning by Magistrates John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin, she described a “man” who came to her, told her she must serve him for six years, and showed her a book with marks in it. Hathorne pressed her directly: [Hathorne]: Why do you hurt these children? [Tituba]: I do not hurt them. [Hathorne]: Who is it then? [Tituba]: The devil, for ought I know. Under continued questioning, she said: “The devil came to me and bid me serve him.” She claimed there were four women and one man. She named Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. She described a “tall man of Boston.” She said they hurt the children and “lay all upon me.” When asked directly: [Hathorne]: Did you not hurt them? [Tituba]: Yes, but I will hurt them no more. According to depositions, the afflicted girls were in fits during questioning — but when Tituba began to confess, they grew quiet. From this point forward, the accusations extended beyond the original three women. Follow along as we continue day by day through 1692.

March 1, 1692 — Salem Village (modern-day Danvers) March 1, 1692 — Salem Village (modern-day Danvers). One day after arrest warrants were issued, Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne were brought before Magistrates John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin for public examination. The warrants had charged them with “suspition of witchcraft” and causing “much injury” to Elizabeth Parris, Abigail Williams, Anna Putnam, and Elizabeth Hubbard. Constable Joseph Herrick recorded that he had “apprehended the persons with in mentioned” and conducted a search for “Images and such like” connected to witchcraft — but “can find non.” On March 1, the accusations moved from written complaint to public interrogation. The examinations were not trials. They were meant to determine whether the accused would be formally held for further proceedings. The afflicted girls were present, and their reactions during questioning were treated as evidence. By the end of the day, Salem Village had gathered to witness what would become one of the most infamous episodes in colonial American history.
