As Salem celebrates its 400th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of the places that have defined our city over the years.

This stop brings us to Lappin Park, at the corner of Essex and Washington Streets. In 1985, this corner looked very different. Twenty years later, in 2005, the bronze statue of Samantha Stephens from Bewitched was installed here.

What was once simply a small downtown park has become one of Salem’s most recognizable landmarks, welcoming thousands of visitors who stop for a photo each year.

Throughout Salem’s 400th anniversary year, we’ll be pairing historic photographs with the same view today. We can’t wait to share more with you.
