In April 1830, Captain Joseph White — a wealthy me In April 1830, Captain Joseph White — a wealthy merchant and member of Salem’s elite — was murdered in his bed on Essex Street. What followed was a complex investigation involving prominent families, a trial that captured national attention, and a case that would go on to inspire writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe.
